Yan Morvan was born in 1954 and published his first work of photojournalism
with "Liberation" when he was twenty. He began photographing gangs in 1976,
and continued that work for twenty years. In 1983 he received the Robert
Capa Prize.
Yan Morvan's Paris is not the Paris visitors, or for that matter, many
Parisians, ever see.
It is people that inhabit the ring of apartments that are the suburbs of
the ancient city. Yan Morvan's portraits are brutal and real, yet have a
great sense of humor and sarcasm. He is a true son of Balzac and Genet.
When described as a great French photographer Yan's only comment is, "I am
not French. I am from Brittany."
These remarkable portraits were done in the suburbs of Paris in 1989.
In 1996 Yan Morvan co-founded the online magzine Photographie.com
